When these <strong data-start=\"285\" data-end=\"295\" data-is-only-node=\"\">metals<\/strong> are worked, they harden, making it difficult to continue shaping them. During <strong data-start=\"374\" data-end=\"387\">annealing<\/strong>, the material is heated until it glows <strong data-start=\"427\" data-end=\"434\">red<\/strong> or <strong data-start=\"438\" data-end=\"448\">orange<\/strong> and then rapidly cooled, usually in <strong data-start=\"485\" data-end=\"494\">water<\/strong>. This process softens the <strong data-start=\"521\" data-end=\"530\">metal<\/strong> again, making it malleable for further work.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"970\">Annealing helps <strong>reduce internal stress<\/strong> in the <strong data-start=\"627\" data-end=\"636\">metal<\/strong>, preventing cracks or breaks during subsequent shaping. It also makes <strong data-start=\"707\" data-end=\"720\">soldering<\/strong> easier and allows for better surface texture and finishing, giving the piece its desired look. Each <strong data-start=\"821\" data-end=\"830\">metal<\/strong> has its own <strong>optimal temperature<\/strong> for annealing, with <strong data-start=\"887\" data-end=\"895\">gold<\/strong> typically being heated to between <strong data-start=\"930\" data-end=\"949\" data-is-only-node=\"\">430\u00b0C and 595\u00b0C<\/strong> (800\u00b0F and 1,100\u00b0F).<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"972\" data-end=\"1177\">For <strong data-start=\"976\" data-end=\"986\">safety<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"988\" data-end=\"1013\">heat-resistant gloves<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1018\" data-end=\"1029\">goggles<\/strong> should always be worn, and work should be done in a well-ventilated area.
